Gateway Rotary spending two days pruning 78 smoke trees planted in honor of the 78 Staten Island fireman who perished on 9/11 so that the garden looks its best for the day of observance.

On September 9, 2011 we have planned a Day of Reflection in Observance of the 10th Anniversary of September 11, 2001.

The Federated Garden Clubs of New York State, Inc., with 250 Staten Island members, is sending out invitations, advertising in the Staten Island Advance and Staten Island Community Television, decorating “The Healing Garden” with American Flags and wreaths, creating a pamphlet with agenda, names of the deceased and words of reflection.  We are also asking firefighters across the street at Rescue 5 to open door of firehouse to public after observance to view the  tributes from all over the world displayed in response to 9/11, We are hostessing a luncheon for the attendees of the observance at the Marine Corp League headquarters as well as displaying poster boards of remembrance and response from the Staten Island community in the creation of "The Healing Garden” at the Marine Corp. League Headquarters.

Gateway Rotary pruning and inviting other rotary chapters to attend observance and hopefully volunteer at “The Healing Garden” in the future.

FDNY Retirees, Inc. planting flowers at the Fireman’s Memorial on the site, in charge of speaking at the observance and asking our local politicians to attend to reflect on the heroism of the fallen firefighter as well as our fellow Staten Islanders who perished.

Marine Corp League will present the Colors and Honor Guard and lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  The Marine Corp League will then  open their headquarters at 12:00 pm to the attendees of the observance for refreshments.

South Shore Artist Group to paint pictures of“The Healing Garden” in observance of the 10th Anniversary as they have done in the past.

The number of volunteers expected is 300.  What these volunteers expect to accomplish is to express their gift of volunteerism with pride and that “The Healing Garden”  continue to be a place of comfort “a sign of compassion, and a reminder to us all of how lives were changed on that day”.

The need is to express to the still stunned Staten Island community that people share and care in the tragic events of September 11, 2011, the sacrifices made by the Fireman and horrible loss of lives that shocked and stunnedStaten Island,New York, the nation and the world.

We are sending out invitations to many organizations and companies to attend the observance.  We are advertising in theStaten IslandAdvance; we are spreading the information by word of mouth. We are promoting the observance onStaten IslandCommunity Television.   We are reaching out to organizations which are connected to theStaten Islandwidows and widowers of 9/11.

We will have photos of the volunteerism and observance; we have asked Staten Island Community Television CTV to tape the observance.

We are requesting the Staten Island Advance Newspaper to report on the observance.  We will make a list of the organizations that volunteered and serviced as well as a list of people who attended.  Information on letterhead from organizations with volunteer attendance can be submitted.  Whatever is necessary in order to obtain grant funds for the continuation of this sacred garden to continue to thrive in dignity will be provided.

We are also requesting on Sunday, September 11, 2011 the Boy Scouts of American to dig out newly rooted smoke trees to be distributed to the community at “TheHealingGarden”.  This troop is instrumental in the planting and maintenance of “TheHealingGarden” through the years with also two eagle projects being performed at the site.

“There is a place where the anniversary of September 11, 2001 is observed every day.  It’s a place that was created by the hearts and soul of the people of the Federated Garden Clubs of New York State Inc. and the help of the Staten Islandcommunity.  It is a place of comfort, a sign of compassion and reminder to us all of how lives where changed on that day. The place I am talking about is The HealingGarden. www.gardencentral.org/fgcny/ a USDA Living Memorial Project (www.livingmemorialsproject.net
