9-11 Night of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil and Community Memorial
The Casa Grande Youth Commission became an official city commission in November 2004 with the first commissioners appointed by the City ofCasa Grande Council on January 18, 2005. The Commission meets the second Saturday of every month at the Casa Grande City Hall Council Chambers. The Commission brainstorms on different issues and then develops procedures to addresses those issues in our community. The Youth Commission Mission states “Representing the youth of our city, making it a better place through our dedication, leadership, and creativity.”
To honor this mission, The Youth Commission chose to host an event in 2006 to remember those victims of the September 11, 2001. The “9-11 Night of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil” was planned, implemented and hosted by our youth leaders. The event was such a hit with the community and the city leaders that the mayor asked the Youth Commission to make it an annual event. Each year the Youth Commission has sponsored the event and it continues to be a success. They will be hosting the 6th Annual 9-11 Night of Remembrance on Sunday, September 11, 2011.
During 2011 the City Of Casa Grande built a memorial to those members of our community that have fallen in the line of service. Family members can add their loved ones to this memorial upon application to the city. This memorial is located in the city hall complex and maintained by volunteers and parks staff and available for viewing twenty four hours a day.
The names of all organizations who will be involved in the service activity:
The host of the 9-11 Night of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil will be organized by the Casa Grande Youth Commission. The Youth Commission will be collaborating with a minimum of the following agencies/groups for this event:

- Casa Grande Community Services Department (Parks and Recreation)
- Casa Grande Police Department
- Casa Grande Police Explorers
- Casa Grande Fire Department
- Casa Grande Fire Department Explorers
- Local Boys Scout, Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops
- VFW Lodge
- Local Armed Forces
- Junior ROTC
- Civil Air Patrol
- Local high school music (orchestra and choirs)
- Casa Grande Chamber of Commerce
- Arizona Department of Public Safety
- U.S.Border Patrol – Casa Grande Sector
All volunteers will be asked to join the Arizona Centennial Volunteer Challenge sponsored by the Governors’ Commission on Service and Volunteerism and 3 TV‘s Passion to Action. There will be a sign in at the event to log all volunteers and their hours.
How the service activity will address a community need or challenge, commemorate the losses on September 11, 2001 and honor the service and sacrifices of those who have responded since that day.
This activity will provide the opportunity for our community to come together to remember lives lost during the tragedy of September 11, 2001 while at the same time honor those local police, fire and service personnel who keep our city and state safe on a daily basis.
Special recognition will take place to honor those veterans who have served in the service of years past. Because this is the 10th anniversary, the Youth Commission will be inviting all civic groups and public service groups to create display booths to honor our service personnel, past and present.
Students, parents and community members will be invited to create written messages and drawings reflecting "What I remember about September 11, 2001". These messages will be on display at the Night of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil at our local city park on September 11, 2011.
The event will begin at 5:00 pm with several guest speakers and music before the candlelight vigil takes place at approximately 6:30 pm. Taps will be conducted at the conclusion of the program. Candles are provided by the Youth Commission.
The Youth Commission has invited a number of youth groups to be involved with this event as a way to reflect their compassion and respect as young citizens. Every aspect of the event will involve young people from grades K-12. Youth groups will be setting up for the event, distributing candles, hanging posters, playing patriotic music, etc.
The number of volunteers expected:
A minimum of 15 student leaders will be involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the event. However, with the variety of youth groups that will be involved with the actual event, we anticipate a minimum of 75 volunteers helping. Additionally, there will be city leaders, staff and adult volunteers supporting the efforts of this student-initiated event. With the addition of the informational booths the volunteer amount could grow as high as 150 volunteers. Since this event relies heavily on volunteers for it’s success, all aspects are planned, implemented by and evaluated by volunteers. Volunteers will be asked to plan and organize, set up for and take down the day of the event. The Youth Commission will also be asked to evaluate and provide acknowledgement of the service provided by the volunteers to the media.
Information about how you will promote the Day of Service and Remembrance:
Information will be provided to all local schools (nine elementary, 3 middle schools and 4 high schools) as well as the local college. Posters will be provided to local businesses, city buildings, libraries, etc. Promotion will take place in with our newspaper and social media outlets such as the city website, Community Service Activity Brochure which distributes over 15,000 copies and is available on the city web site and the Youth Commission Facebook site.
The Casa Grande Youth Commission’s vision reflects that they are “Young diverse leaders making a positive and reliable impact on our community.” The 9-11 Night of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil proves they have built a united front between our community and its young people to honor the past, the present and the future of patriotism of our country.
